Heading North on Lake Michigan

Well the time has come (actually it came on Monday morning June 7th) to throw the dock lines and head out and start our Journey for the summer. We own our slip at Anchorage Marina in Holland, Michigan. However we spend very little time there, a typical summer we rent out our slip for the entire summer and we travel leaving the boat where ever we may be when our time is up.

June 7, 2010 we headed out onto Lake Macatawa toward the breakwaters where Big Red lights the end of the pier head. Lake Macatawa is the waters inside of the Holland port into Lake Michigan. We cleared the pier head at 6 am the big lake was flat. We enjoyed the sunrise over the Holland shoreline as we travelled north. Our final destination for the day was  planned to be Ludington, MI. Our journey up was calm and uneventful.

We enjoyed Ludington walking through town and the park along the harbor. They have many bronze statues lining the walkways. And the car ferry The Badger is always a must see if you are in port. The Badger runs from Ludington to Manitowoc, WI to save cars, trucks, bikes & folks on foot time. It is a wonderful alternative. Lots of shops and restaurants in town the only thing we purchased however was fuel and my fishing license oh and leaf worms for fishing.

We traveled from Ludington to Frankfort the following morning. The Lake was around 1 to 2 footers a nice roll. We arrived mid day and unloaded our tandem with trailer and went for a nice bike ride with Rolo in tow. The weather turned cold and rainy so we headed back did a few indoor things and enjoyed a great dinner on the town. It stormed during the night and the wind was blowing pretty good pushing us a bit here and there in the slip, it sure made for good sleeping though. Today was really quite cold and the temps dipped into the upper 50's at night. Burrrrr

Frankfort is one of our favorite ports. Lots to do biking, fishing, shopping & lots of restaurants.

The following morning we woke to fog & a little wind. We decided to head out for a walk to the pier to check the Lake conditions. The water was breaking over the break walls and the fog was thick so we chose to hit the bakery for coffee and sweet treat. The sun peaked through and the fog lifted we again walked to the pier head and the waves weren't as bad so we made the choice to head out.

We headed out of Frankfort around 11 am moving north toward Leland where currently we are cruising past Sleeping Bear Dunes as I type this. I will write more as time and Internet allows.
