Lake Huron into the Saint Mary's River

Well today is July 4th 2010 a lot has happened in our life over the past week. In our last post we left off in St. Ignace, Michigan. We dropped dock lines in St. Igance around 7 A.M. due to a rumor the weather was to take a turn for the worse in the afternoon.  We needed a four hour weather window to make DeTour, so off we went.
The morning was overcast and Lake Huron was calm to 1 foot, we rounded the west side of Mackinac Island about the time the sun was trying to come up. Well the sun never really made it out and the fog was in and out with a pretty good visibility so onward we went. About three hours into our run the wind was building and it started to rain. We now have 1 to 3's off the bow so still comfortable, we would need to make a port turn to head into the St. Mary's River and DeTour is the first Harbor on the river. So our ride north was good until we had to make our turn, we only had beaming seas until we made our way into the river this is where Kadee & Rolo decided to ROLL out of bed. We made it into the DeTour marina and spend the rest of the day and night there. It is a nice little town in the Upper Peninsula of Michigan. It sits right across from Drummond Island which you can take a car ferry across to. We didn't do much while we were here due to the all day rain. It is also a great spot to sit and what freighters pass by. We headed out of DeTour the following morning we made our way up the St. Mary's river to Sault Ste. Marie which is where the Soo Locks are. The marina we stayed at is directly at the base of the Soo Locks with Canada directly across the river from us. There is a fair amount of things to see and do here. A few good museums and the locks are fascinating. We stayed here a little longer than usual because we needed to rent a car for Kadee's college orientation at Calvin. Ed and I walked 7.5 miles to pick up the rental car then came back and picked up Kadee for lunch. We made the Walmart run and stocked up on all our needed supplies for Lake Superior. The following morning we did our road trip to Holland, Michigan to pick up our car so we each had a car for the weekend. After doing the college thing for two days Kadee, Kayleigh & Rolo were ready to make the flight back home for a couple of months. Ed and I made the trip back to the Soo and are getting ready to head into Lake Superior for an Adventure Ed has been planning for a long long time. So there maybe a long pause between posts. On Lake Superior there is little phone or internet, I will post when we have the option. I have attached quite a few photo's most from Sault Ste. Marie where we find the freighters and tugs fascinating. We are due to shove as very soon for Lake Superior so I hope to chat soon. Enjoy
