Pictured Rock National Shoreline

Grand Island Light

Well summer seems to be slipping away faster with each new week. After leaving our anchorage in the Apostle's we made a push for Ontonagon, Michigan. Our thoughts were set on hitting a few ports that we have bypassed in previous trips to Superior. We found Ontonagon to be one of those small villages where they once were a thriving town. Then the new highway came to town. It appears that with the new highway came the "need" for businesses to be where the traffic was. This has left town with many empty buildings. We did find the area very friendly and enjoyed one of the many pubs that were left in town.
From Ontonagon we set our course for Eagle Harbor. This was another port new to us. Eagle harbor is a safe harbor, the marina is unmanned. It is a free dock with a very nice park around it. The town is located across the harbor from the dock so we ran the dingy over and checked it out. Eagle harbor has a nice museum, one restaurant, and a couple of B & B's. We toured the museum, enjoyed the restaurant and had a good time tooling around in the dingy.
The following morning we headed for Copper Harbor, Michigan. We tied up at the State marina and ran into a couple of sail boaters that we had first met at Madeline Island. after chatting with them. We off loaded our tandem and went for a great bike ride around town, toured the fort and did some shopping. There is a great German restaurant in town where we had dinner.
We decided to make a big push for Munising where we anchored at Grand Island. It made for a long day which later we found was well worth it.
We had a blast exploring the shoreline around Pictured Rock. Pictured Rock is located on the southern shore of Lake Superior between Munising, Michigan and Grand Marais, Michigan. The National Parks have a visitor center near Munising and there are hiking trails along the shoreline. We were blessed with flat calm water or we would not have been able to explore the caves up so close. As you can see in the pictures the Big Lake was flat. This made the long run up today so worth it. We explored over 35 miles in the dingy along the shoreline. We were out exploring the shoreline until 8. Once we returned to the boat we were starving, we lit the grill and enjoyed burgers and a couple of PBR's what an AWESOME day!
We are currently headed for Grand Marais. It sounds like we may have to hold up there for a couple of days. The forecast for the weekend looks like the Big lake is going to be lumpy.

We hope you enjoy the pictures as much as we did exploring.
