Grand Marais, Michigan

Ships Blog August 13, 2010

This morning is beautiful we are anchored in a cove off Grand Island near Munising, Michigan. Today we are headed for Grand Marais, Michigan. We have been to Grand Marais many times, it is one of our favorite ports on Lake Superior.

Our journey along pictured rock national shoreline into Grand Marais was a nice 1 foot somewhat following sea. Today is Friday and we really are looking forward to holding up in Grand Marais for the weekend and just relaxing. We have kept ourselves so busy everyday we were ready for a break.

We tied up at the town wall where we found out there was a music festival and farmers market this weekend. The National Park runs from Munising to Grand Marais so there are a lot of outdoor activities here.

There was a town parade to kick off the Music Fest. Grand Marais being a small town well…….. the parade was real small. Four kids walking with I’m proud to be a yooper flags, Three pickup trucks one pulling a portable hot tub & my personal favorite A make shift lawnmower converted into a mower/cooler, Short and sweet. After the parade the music played and there were two food booths Bubba’s BBQ with Deep fried Oreo’s (nope we couldn’t bring ourselves to try it) & the other booth was Thai food, not sure just where that one fit in. We went to the Brew Pub they have a micro brew in the back room and pretty good food too.

Living on a boat we always check the weather even if we are not traveling. The forecast for tomorrow looks awesome, sunny & flat water. (we didn’t want to travel) The following day the day we were scheduled to head to Sault Ste. Marie (100 miles) looks pretty bad. Ed and I both had our hearts set on just chillin’ in Grand Marais and enjoying the National Park even though we would end up staying additional days……..we chose to stay.

We had a great time biking to Au Sable Point lighthouse and hiking the trail along the shoreline. Rock hounding our way from The Au Sable river toward Grand Marais. The following morning as forecasted the winds started. By late morning a Gale Warning was issued right through to Tuesday! So our weekend turned into a 5 day visit. The waves were impressive, the near shore waves were 7 to 9’s & Off shore 13 to 17’s WoW. We had a good idea that was going to happen with the forecast. This is our kind of town so we had plenty to keep us busy. If we are going to have a weather delay Grand Marais was a good place to be. We had a ball all of our 5 days here.

We have attached a few photo’s of Grand Marais and the area so you can get an idea of what it has to offer. The only shots I missed were the parade sorry.
